バルターの裁判が進んでいたが、リーは父が、バルターには裁判を受ける権利すらないと言い切るほど彼を嫌っていることを知り、それが決して父一人の考え方とは思えないことから、審理無効を求めるしかないと提案する。ランプキンも同意見だったが、バルターは拒否し、あくまで評決を出させるように求める。後刻、船団はイオニア星雲に向けて最後のジャンプを実行する。ところがジャンプ後、船団の各船は停電状態となり、制御不能となる。
