引退した今も国民的ヒーローである伝説の闘牛士モントーヤは、闘牛用の雄牛と向かい合っている友人エクトールを麻酔銃で撃ち、事故に見せかけて殺害する。メキシコへ休暇に来ていたコロンボはひょんなことから捜査に加わることに。現場の状況から殺人であると断定、モントーヤに目を付けるが、殺人の動機が分からない。
