物語は、ＩＭＦ（IMPOSSIBLE MISSIONS FORCE）のリーダー、ジム・フェルプスが極秘作戦指令を受けるところから始まる。作戦の対象となるのは、国家機関が直接手を下すことの難しい人物や陰謀などである。リーダーのジム・フェルプスは、ターゲットとなる人物の写真と経歴を元に作戦を立てチームを結成、実行不可能と思われる作戦に挑んで行く。チームのメンバーとして選ばれるのは変装の名人パリス、電子工学のエキスパートであるバーニー、その美貌で敵を虜にするダナといったスペシャリストたち。彼らはそれぞれ得意分野を生かし、驚くべき作戦を展開。どんなに不利な状況下でも完璧なチームワークをもって寸分の狂いもなく計画を遂行するのだ。
