アリゾナの大学で相次いで放火事件が発生。犯行の頻度が次第にエスカレートしてきたため、ギデオンたちはプロファイリングを依頼される。BAUチームは従来の連続放火犯の犯人像をあてはめようとするが、どうも矛盾点が多くしっくりこない。やがて「常識を脱却」したリードの活躍で、意外な犯人像が浮かび上がる。
