宝石店の店主ベイカーが強盗殺人の被害者となる。妻に贈り物を買うため店を訪れていたシカゴのビジネスマン、フォーサイスも巻き添えとなり、重傷を負った。残っていた指紋から逮捕された犯人は、グルジア人のトラパンザ。裁判が始まるが、肝心の目撃証人フォーサイスが姿を消し、トラパンザには無罪評決が転がり込む。
