「法律扶助協会」は、経済的な理由から弁護士を雇えない被告に補助を出す協会。その職員たちが待遇改善を求め、裁判所前でストを続行している。そのさなか、ひとり裏門でピケを張っていた弁護士助手のドレズナーが、車にひかれて殺害される。逮捕されたのは、10年前妻を殺したとして有罪判決を受けたが、その後ＤＮＡ検査で無実が判明したサンダーソンだった。
