不動産業を営むジョン･シンガーの射殺体が発見された。彼にはギャンブルによるトラブルがあり、彼に金を貸していた金髪で潰れた耳の黒人が容疑者として浮上する。捜査を続けようとしていたルーポ刑事に、グリーン刑事は友達の見舞いに行くので、続きは翌朝にしようと言い、署を後にした。その夜、金髪の黒人が射殺される。射殺したのはグリーン刑事だった。
