アバドンの居場所をつかめずに業を煮やしたサムは、妻が夫を些細な理由で撲殺した事件を調査しようとするが、ディーンは同行を断り、残ってアバドン捜索を続けると言う。「元始の剣」を握ったために、ディーンはサムに対して抱いた殺意に悩まされ、怖気づいていたのだ。一方、事件現場のミルトンという町に赴いたサムは、保安官から似たような不可解な事件がいくつも起きていたことを聞かされる。
