元上院議員の元妻であるニコール･ベイリーの遺体が自宅で発見された。凶器は暖炉の火かき棒。遺体の膣内には木製のスプーンが入っていたたため、痴情のもつれによる犯行かと思われた。しかしニコールが殺害される直前まで家族と連絡を取り合っていたことで、捜査は新たな展開を見せる。
