カンザスシティー警察のキャル・マクギー刑事がＪＪの元を訪れ、担当しているホームレス地区で失踪事件が発生していると訴える。消えているのはホームレス、娼婦、麻薬依存症者などばかりで、失踪届も出されていないが、その数は少なくとも63人に及ぶという。担当地区で犯罪件数が減ったため、キャルは市長から表彰までされていたが、それは犯罪者の数が減ったからに過ぎないというのだ。そしてキャルには「恥を知れ」という脅迫めいた手紙まで届いていた。
