海外ドラマ最新レポート Vol.433　 リナ・エスコ、5年間願い続けて「S.W.A.T.」の1エピソードを監督

「S.W.A.T.」でチームの紅一点、クリス・アロンゾ隊員を演じているリナ・エスコは、女優業の傍ら、監督業にも興味を持ち、2014年には初監督作品『Free the Nipple（原題）』を発表しているマルチな才能の持ち主だ。そのリナが「S.W.A.T.」シーズン5第15話で、TVシリーズの監督デビュー。シーズン1からレギュラー出演しながら、製作陣に懇願し続け、ようやくの大願成就だ。
 
米エンタメサイトのインタビューで、リナは「監督をさせてもらうのに、5年もかかった」と愚痴をこぼしながらも、監督業の充実感でいっぱい。「新しい役割（監督業）にすごく興奮したわ。現場で楽しく仕事をするためには、徹底した準備が必要なことは知っている」 リナによれば、同エピソードの脚本は全47ページ。全てのシーンを8日半で撮影を終えなければならない。そのため毎日10時間から11時間カメラを回していたという。
 
「常時4台から5台のカメラを回していたわ。責任重大よ。皆で協力しあって撮影するのは楽しい、だから監督業が好きなのよ」 47ページの脚本全てを描き切るのは当然だが、リナは脚本に描かれていないことも重視していたという。 「一番のチャレンジは、脚本に描かれていない部分をどう伝えるか。アクションシーンや暴力的なシーンでさえ、視聴者に感情移入してもらいたかったの。このエピソードにはいわゆる“悪役”が存在するのだけど、彼にも感情を盛り込みたかった。悪役ではあるけれど、（同時に）彼はたくさんのものを失った。視聴者にはそこを分かってほしいの」
 
そのためにリナが最もこだわったのが音楽。「2か月前に脚本を手に入れてから、すぐに音楽のプレイリストを作ったわ。音楽が登場人物の感情を表現するのに役立つと思ったから。私たち『S.W.A.T.』のヒーローは、いつも強い人間として描かれているけれど、皆、欠点があるし、弱さもある。問題を抱えている人間なのよ。それを知ってもらえば、視聴者が自分たちと共通点を見つけて、もっと共感できるはずだと思ったの」
 
リナの描きたかったのは、ヒーローたちの強さではなく弱さ。女性監督らしい観点といえるかもしれない。リナの演出が正しければ、視聴者はより一層「S.W.A.T.」を愛することだろう。
