ジェイソン・キングは南米の一小国の大使館に呼ばれ、文化担当官の美女デルフィーから、彼の新作に対して同国で現代小説賞を授与することになったので授賞式に参列してほしいと要請される。都合が悪いと断り、帰りかけたキングは呼び止められ木箱に詰められて本国に送られそうになるが、なんとかうまく大使館を逃げ出す。しかしなぜ自分を木箱に詰めようとしたのか好奇心にかられ同国へやって来る。
