生い立ちの異なる７歳の男児２人が誘拐された。事件は優れた直観力を持つイアン･バークレイ警部の手に委ねられた。バークレイは親しい部下であり、早期退職していたエイミー・フォスター刑事を呼び戻す。そんな中、バークレイのオフィスに一通のＥメールが届く。メールには意識を失っているらしい男児２人の写真が添付されており、２人の体には“神聖なる命”という言葉が書かれていた。写真は何百キロも離れた地から追跡不能な携帯電話を使って送られており、複数の人間がこの事件にかかわっていると思われた。翌朝、男児２人のＴシャツが入った封筒がBBCバーミンガム支局に届けられ、ついに犯人たちの要求が明かされる……。
