ミネソタ州の小さな町ハプリン。町の中心的存在の大きなパン工場からいい匂いが漂う平和なこの町を、人々は「ハッピー・タウン」と呼んでいる。だが、そんな「幸せな町」には恐ろしい過去があった。12年前、この町で発生した奇妙な連続失踪事件。何の痕跡も残さず人を消し去ることから、住民は犯人を「マジックマン」と呼ぶようになるが、7年間も続いたその事件は5年前に未解決のまま終わりを迎えていた。
その後、現在に至るまでの5年間あらゆる犯罪と無縁だったハッピー・タウンで、ある日、身の毛のよだつような殺人事件が発生した。「マジックマン」の再来か？ 不安は広がり、町の人々は疑心暗鬼に。そして小さな町での平和な暮らしは、次第に崩れ始める……。
町の保安官代理、トミー・コンロイは捜査を進めていくうちに、町の住人達の隠された秘密を徐々に知ることになる。微笑みを浮かべる住人と平和な町の裏に隠された真実とは一体何か？
