昨秋からスタートした2015-16年シーズンが5月に終了した米TV界。CBS、NBC、FOX、ABCの4大ネットワークの平均視聴率が発表され、ロングランのヒット番組を多く抱えるCBSが3シーズンぶりにトップの座を奪取した。
各ネットワークの18－49歳層の平均視聴率は、CBSが2.3、NBCが2.1、FOXが1.9、そしてABCが1.8だった。
昨年首位だったNBCは、視聴者参加型リアリティーショー「The Voice」のパワーダウンなどが響き、視聴率を下げた。一方のCBSは、7.7の高視聴率を獲得した「第50回スーパーボウル」の放送が貢献した。
しかし、CBS最大の強みはロングランのシリーズが好調なこと。「ビッグバン★セオリー ギークなボクらの恋愛法則」の平均視聴率は3.7。「NCIS ネイビー犯罪捜査班」は同2.2。全ドラマ／コメディシリーズの中で、前者は2位、後者は5位の好成績だった。
4大ネットワークの平均視聴率争いは、過去10シーズンのうち、2011-12年シーズンまではFOXが独走。視聴者参加型リアリティーショー「アメリカン・アイドル」が数字を押し上げていた。翌2012-13年シーズンには、CBSが首位に立ち、続く2013-15年の２シーズンはNBCが連勝。2015-16年シーズンは、CBSがトップの座を奪い返す結果となった。
しかし、TV界を取り巻く状況は厳しい。2008年にはTV視聴形態におけるライブ（生）視聴が81％を占めたのに対し、今回の調査では51％まで低下。4大ネットワーク平均視聴率の合計も昨シーズンの8.8から、今シーズンは8.1まで下げている。
