ネブラスカ州とイリノイ州で、同じ状態で殺害された遺体が発見される。二人の被害者はクロロホルムで失神させられた後、縛り上げられて殺害されていたが、それ以外の接点はない。しかし犯行現場は1本のハイウェイでつながっていた。殺害現場を見たクーパーたちは、犯人に同行者がおり、殺害の一部始終を見させられていたのではないかと推理する。
