「HEROES REBORN／ヒーローズ・リボーン」で“ベンガドール”のマスクをかぶり、正義のために戦うカルロスを演じる、ライアン・グスマンが、米で公開された映画『Everybody wants some‼』に主役の一人、ケニー・ローパー役で出演している。同映画は、『6才のボクが、大人になるまで。』でハリウッド注目のリチャード・リンクレイタ―監督の新作だ。
『Everybody wants some‼』は大学野球部の学生たちを主人公にした青春ストーリー。実は、ライアン自身も学生時代、野球に打ち込んでいた。
「彼は素晴らしい野球選手だよ、それにちょっぴり自信家だ」とリンクレイタ―監督。「だけど、フレンドリーなところもある。彼には天然の魅力と機知を感じるんだ」
カリフォルニア州サクラメント育ちのライアン、高校時代は地区選抜チームの一員にも選ばれた有望な投手だった。シエラ大学に進学してからは、9勝0敗の成績を残したシーズンもある。その時はチーム自体も同州で5位の好成績。「ライアンの頑張りが大きかった」（当時の野球部監督、ロブ・ウィルソン氏）と、エースとしてチームを率いた。
「ライアンは努力家で、一生懸命投げてくれた。そのせいで彼の腕は故障してしまった。だけどそれがエースの宿命ではないだろうか。エースは痛みを感じながら投げるもの。彼も腕が痛くて練習では球を握ることができなくなった。それでも試合の日になると、闘士に豹変していたよ」（同氏）
野球を辞めた後、ライアンはモデル、格闘家などを経て、俳優を目指した。チャニング・テイタムをスターに押し上げた映画『ステップ・アップ』の続編『ステップ・アップ4: レボリューション』『ステップ・アップ5: アルティメット』に主演、ジェニファー・ロペスの相手役で『戦慄の誘惑』にも出演した。スター街道まっしぐらの現在も、ライアンの夢は「地元で小さなコングロマリット（企業体）を作ること」。「サクラメントは州都なのに、ロサンゼルスやサンフランシスコに負けている。僕らがなんとかしなきゃね！」と地元愛に満ちている。
野球経験のおかげで今回の映画の主役を勝ち取った。そして野球で培ったド根性が、これからもライアンを支えてゆく。
