「エレメンタリ― ホームズ＆ワトソン in NY」のジョニー・リー・ミラーの出世作となった、映画『トレインスポッティング』の続編が製作されることが明らかになった。オリジナルを手掛けた、ダニー・ボイル監督がメガホンを取り、ジョン・ホッジが脚本を執筆する続編には、ジョニーの他に、ユアン・マクレガー、ロバート・カーライルら主要キャストも再集結するという。
1996年に公開された『トレインスポッティング』は、ボイル監督のスタイリッシュな映像感覚が話題を呼び、世界各国で大ヒット。200万ドルの製作費ながら、7000万ドル以上の配収を記録した。キャストからも国際的にはまだ無名だったジョニーやユアンはじめ、後に活躍する多くの英国人スターを輩出した。
続編は、オリジナルの原作小説を執筆したアーヴィン・ウェルシュの小説「Porno」（邦題「トレインスポッティング ポルノ」）を下敷きに、ホッジが脚本を完成させた。すでに脚本を読んだロバートは「オレが読んだ脚本の中で最高の部類に入る」と絶賛している。
撮影スタートは、2016年4月から。主要キャストのうち、「エレメンタリ― ホームズ＆ワトソン in NY」に主演するジョニー、「ワンス・アポン・ア・タイム」に出演中のロバートのスケジュールを考慮し、TVシリーズの撮影休みとなる春から夏にかけて、映画撮影を行う。
『トレインスポッティング』続編は、オリジナル公開から20周年を記念して企画された。当初は2016年の公開が予定されていたが、現時点では一年延期した翌2017年に公開される見通しだという。
