3月12日に放送された「ヴァンパイア・ダイアリーズ」のシーズン６第16話「The Downward Spiral」で、初監督に挑戦したイアン・サマーハルダー。「ヴァンパイア・ダイアリーズ」では、イアンの共演者、ポール・ウェズレイが、すでに2つのエピソードで監督のメガホンを取っている。ポールからは「準備万端に」とアドバイスを受けたイアン、監督と俳優の二足のわらじは刺激的な経験だったらしい。
「一番のチャレンジは時間内に仕事を終えなきゃならないことだったね、それも初めての挑戦で。僕はチャンスを与えられたわけだから、なんとか時間通りにやり遂げたかった。ヘマをしてやり直す時間はないし、予算をオーバーするのも御免だった。皆の頭痛の種にはなりたくなかったんだ。プロの仕事をしたい、だから皆には自分の仕事をきっちりやって欲しかったし、短い時間でトラブルなく撮影を終えたかったんだよ。誰だってベッドに入る前には、一日の仕事を終えた気分でいたいものさ。だから僕は出来る限りの演技をして、出来る限り最高のショットを撮ろうと頑張った。全部出来たか分からないけれど、僕らは一生懸命取り組んだ」
環境保全と動物愛護の慈善団体「イアン・サマーハルダー基金」を立ち上げるなど、イアンはリーダー役が板についている。初めての監督業でも効率よく撮影を終えるため、現場の協力を促し、最高のパフォーマンスを求めたのも、うなづける話だ。
「できることなら、毎週でも（監督を）したい」と、その面白さに目覚めたイアン。行動力は折り紙付きだけに、二度目のメガホンを取る日もそんなに遠くないのかもしれない。
