「スーパーナチュラル」のジャレッド・パダレッキが、うつ病・依存症などに苦しむ人々を支援する非営利団体「To Write Love On Her Arms」に協賛、その理解を求めて、自身の経験した、うつ病の苦しみについて語った。
「僕は人生の一時期、ハッピーな気分になれず、苦しんだことがあった。ほとんど知られていない事実だけれど、それは『スーパーナチュラル』のシーズン３の頃だったと思う。あるエピソードを撮影していて、衣装を着替えに自分のトレーラーに戻ったところで、僕は突然動けなくなってしまったんだ」
その場に医師を呼び、緊急のカウンセリングが始まった。医師の出した診断は「治療を必要とする、うつ症状」。
「レンガの詰まった袋で頭を殴られたような衝撃を受けた。僕はまだ25歳で、番組の主役だった。大好きな犬を飼い、たくさんの友達に囲まれ、ファンにも愛された。働くことも楽しかった。それなのに何故なんだろうと。僕の言いたいのは、そこなんだ。うつ病は仕事が見つからない人の病気ってわけじゃない。必ずしも社会に適応できない人だけが、うつになるってわけでもないんだ」
突発的なうつ病の発生で、撮影が中断になる危機を救ったのは、やはりジャレッドに最も近い男、「スーパーナチュラル」共演者のジェンセン・アクレスともう一人の仲間だった。彼らと一時間じっくりと話し合い、その日は家に帰ることに。そして翌日、ジャレッドは撮影現場に戻ってきた。その後、ゆっくりと仕事をセーブし、休暇を取るうち、症状は改善されたという。
「うつ病と闘うことは恥ずかしいことじゃない」とジャレッド。「僕にとって毎日が（うつ病との）闘いだ。もう毎日うつになるわけじゃないかもしれない、週に一回か、月に一回か、それとも年に一回なのかもしれない。けれど、僕は決して闘うことを忘れないよ」
うつ病と向き合い、闘うことの大切さを説くジャレッド、「To Write Love On Her Arms」支援のため、ジャレッドの肖像と“Always Keep Fighting（ずっと闘い続けよう）”のロゴがプリントされたＴシャツを、ウェブサイトRepresent（represent.com/jared）で販売中だ。
