映画『真夜中のカーボーイ』、そして『帰郷』ではアカデミー主演男優賞を受賞するなど、演技派として知られる「レイ・ドノヴァン ザ・フィクサー」のジョン・ヴォイト。俳優として尊敬を集めるジョンも、長年の奔放な生活がたたり、実娘アンジェリーナ・ジョリーとの不仲を解消できずにいるのは周知の事実だ。
2014年のアンジェリーナとブラッド・ピットの結婚式には招待されず、父親の面目は丸つぶれ。それでも御年76歳のジョンは、娘が可愛くて仕方ないらしい。
アンジェリーナが監督した映画『UNBROKEN』についても、「監督として天賦の才能を持っている。感心したよ」と手放しで絶賛。さらには、「何度も口にしておけば、娘が『じゃあ次の私の映画にジョン・ヴォイトを使ってみようかしら』なんて言うんじゃないかと思ってね」と、アンジェリーナ監督作品に出演を熱望するコメントまで口にしている。
アンジェリーナをスーパースターに押し上げた映画『トゥームレイダー』で、二人は親子役を演じたこともあった。このキャスティングは、ジョンの最初の妻で、アンジェリーナの母、ミシェリーヌ・ベルトランさんのたっての希望だったとも伝えられている。結果的に『トゥームレイダー』の親子共演以降、ジョンの人気は再上昇した。
何度酷い目にあっても、ジョンの心根の優しさを信じていたと言われる、ミシェリーヌさん。ミシェリーヌさんが亡くなった今となっては、誰も父と娘の仲を再び取り持つことはできないのだろうか…。
