今秋から全米ではシーズン10がスタートする「スーパーナチュラル」。ウィンチェスター兄弟のタフガイ兄貴、ディーンを演じるジェンセン・アクレスは、新シーズン第３話のエピソードを監督する。「スーパーナチュラル」で４度目のメガホンとなる“アクレス監督”が、オレ流監督術について語っている。
「基本的に僕はこれでもかってほど監督の準備をする。撮影前は毎晩遅くまで起きて、シーンのリストを作るんだ。僕の場合、（１エピソードにつき）８日間の撮影で、第一日目から８日分のシーンを決めてるからね。ほとんどの監督は、先に２、３日分のシーンを決めて、後は撮影の進度によって、次の日のシーンを決めるぐらいだろう」
豪快な外見からは意外にも、完璧主義のジェンセン。「万が一危篤に陥ったとしても、誰かが僕の撮影バインダーを開けば、『彼はこんなふうに撮りたかったらしいよ』って分かるはずだ」と、その準備万端ぶりをジョーク混じりに説明する。
性格もあるのだろうが、前もって細部まで指示を書いておくのは、自身が主演というマルチタスクの事情ゆえ。指示書をADに手渡した後は、主演として演技に臨まなくてはならない。
「監督業のことは一時忘れて、演技に集中しなきゃいけないからね。昔はその切り替えが難しかったけれど、今はずっと簡単になったよ。なんたって、僕はディーンを９年間も演じているんだからね、性格は染みついている」
それでも監督としてエピソードを全て任される責任、主演として画面の向こうの視聴者に向けての責任と、一人二役は大変な労苦。しかしツラいからこそ、「終わった時は最高にハッピーに感じるんだ！」と、大きなチャレンジを成し遂げた者のみが知る達成感を、ジェンセンは知ってしまった。アクレス監督が５度目のメガホンを執る日もそんなに遠くなさそうだ。
