10月22日（米時間）、MLBナショナル・リーグ優勝決定戦でロサンゼルス・ドジャースを下し、71年ぶりにワールドシリーズ進出を決めた、シカゴ・カブス。MLB有数の人気球団で、熱烈なファンを抱えることで知られるカブス、勝利に歓喜したのは、シカゴ出身の「クリミナル・マインド」スターも例外ではなかった。
そのスターとは、デイヴ・ロッシ役のジョー・マンテーニャ。1947年生まれのジョーは、生粋のカブスファンでありながら、生まれてから一度もワールドシリーズ進出の感激を味わったことがなかったのだ。
しかし、熱烈なファンにとっては屈辱的な年月をより長く耐え忍んでいた、イタリア系米国人のジョーにとって一番大切な人がいた。母親メリー・アンさん（101歳）だ。
カブスが最後に世界一になったのは、今から108年前の1908年。もちろんこれはMLB最長の不名誉な記録だ。
だからジョーは心から願っている。「（ワールドシリーズ）優勝を見せてあげたいよ。母は1915年生まれだから、彼女が生まれる6年前からカブスは優勝してないんだ」
自身のツイッター（@JoeMantegna）でもカブスへの熱い思いを伝えまくっているジョー。過去にはこんな苦い思い出も。
「ひと夏にカブスの試合を10ゲーム見に行ったことがある。全敗だった。あの時は、本当に僕が原因で負けたと信じていたね。カブスって、なぜかファンをそんな健気な気持ちにさせるチームなんだ」
ワールドシリーズ第一戦（対クリーブランド・インディアンス）は25日から。米CBSで放送中の「クリミナル・マインド」シーズン１２はキャストの大幅入れ替えがあり、激動のシーズンを迎えている。ジョーにとっては、公私ともに気持ちの高揚する毎日を過ごしているに違いない。
