サイモン・ベイカー（「メンタリスト」）の映画監督デビュー作となる『Breath』の撮影が、西オーストラリアでスタートする。その撮影を前に、サイモンの心強い相棒となるプロデューサーのマーク・ジョンソンが現地入りしたという。
ジョンソンのハリウッド・プロデューサーとしての経歴は華やかだ。映画『ナルニア国物語』シリーズ、『きみに読む物語』『ギャラクシー・クエスト』に加え、TVでは「ブレイキング・バッド」「ベター・コール・ソウル」と、SFファンタジー、恋愛からシリアスな人間ドラマまで幅広く手掛けている。
サイモンとジョンソンの出会いは、「堕ちた弁護士～ニック・フォーリン～」（2001～04年）。 サイモンの米TVドラマ初主演シリーズとなる同作に、ジョンソンはプロデューサーとして参加していたのだ。番組が終了した後も、二人の友情は続いていたようだ。ジョンソンが、西オーストラリアを舞台にした、ティム・ウィントンの小説「Breath」を読んだのが、今回の映画製作の始まりだった。
「『Breath』を読んですぐにサイモンと話を始めたんだ。以来、西オーストラリアでの映画撮影を夢見ていた」とジョンソン。同じくサイモンも「本を読んで、なんとかして映画化しなければと思った」と原作に惚れ込んだことを明かしている。
撮影を前に、ジョンソンは「ティム・ウィントンの世界が色鮮やかに映像化されるのを待ちきれないね」と胸躍らせる。サイモンとジョンソン、友情で結ばれた二人の夢がついにかなう時が来た。
