海外ドラマ最新レポート Vol.611 　「WALKER／ウォーカー」、画面から伝わる〇〇〇〇らしさとは?

「WALKER／ウォーカー」でボナム・ウォーカー役を演じているミッチ・ピレッジが、作品の舞台となっているテキサス州について、その思いを語っている。
 
米国には特に地名を示さなくとも、画面に映るだけで、どこの場所かピンきてしまう地域がある。NY、カリフォルニア、ハワイなど強い個性を持つ地域は、ストーリーの一部としての大役を担う。テキサスもそんな独特の個性を持つ地域の一つだ。
オレゴン州生まれのミッチは、父親の仕事の都合で住む場所を転々とし、大学はテキサス大学オースティン校に進学。卒業後は地元の劇団でアマチュア俳優として活躍した。テキサスには深い思い入れがある第二の故郷だ。
 
「WALKER／ウォーカー」主演のジャレッド・パダレッキと出会ったのは「スーパーナチュラル」でのこと。ジェンセン・アクレスとも初顔合わせだった。
「初めてジャレッドとジェンセンに会った時、彼らが常識人であることに驚いたものさ」
まだ二人は20代後半から30歳になったばかり、主演ドラマが当たり浮かれていても不思議ではない。しかしミッチが出会ったのは、どっしりと落ち着いた二人の大人の男だった。
「彼らがテキサス出身だと後で聞いた。そこでなるほどと合点がいったのさ」
 
ジャレッドはテキサス州サン・アントニオ生まれ、ジェンセンは同州ダラスだ。生粋のテキサスっ子とミッチはすぐに打ち解けたことだろう。「WALKER／ウォーカー」の製作総指揮を兼ねるジャレッドが、自身の父親役にミッチを推したのは想像に難くない。
「テキサスには、全てに通じる“らしさ”みたいなものがあるんだ。作品を通して、それを伝えることが出来ているとしたら本当に嬉しいよ」
 
決して華やかではないが、米国人の原風景のような“テキサスらしさ”が視聴者に伝わったら大成功。「WALKER／ウォーカー」はテキサスだから描けるストーリーなのだ。
