ヴァンダーホフという慈善家が死亡したというニュースを見て、服役中のセバスチャン・モランがホームズに面会を求める。モリアーティによる殺しだと言うのだ。モランが捕まる直前、ヴァンダーホフの写真がモリアーティからメールで送られてきていたからだった。ホームズは警察には知らせずジョーンと調査を進める。
